What’s up with this magical date?
How classic! It seems every year, I see the same patterns in people and their goal setting. Everyone tends to want to wait until January first to start making major lifestyle changes. Whether it’s starting to hit the gym more frequently, eating cleaner, starting a new diet, a daily routine, or any other major goal. People tend to wait until the beginning of the year to start working towards their goals.
Why?
I keep seeing all sorts of gym specials and nutrition products being advertised for January 1st. What is it about the first of the month of January that makes people want to start drastically changing their lives on this date? What really changes?!
Don’t get caught up in the “new year, new me” routine. There’s not going to be a major shift from December 31st to January 1st. So, don’t wait to get started on your goals! I keep seeing people waiting around to start taking action on the lifestyle changes they want to accomplish. Which is why I gathered my top 7 reaons why you shouldn’t wait till January 1st to start working towards your goals!
1. Jumpstart your resolutions.
Think of all the things you want to accomplish during the new year. Is it a pretty long list? Why wait until the first to start a bunch of new goals and habits? Is that really realistic? You’ll have a lot more momentum going for the new year if you can get started early on some of those goals. You can work up to it slowly and mindfully, instead of trying to start a bunch of things at once and then burning out. Start forming good habits now, especially through the holidays! If you can make it through the holidays, you can make it through anything.
2. Nothing really changes on January first other than the year. You’re still the same you!
So we’re moving into 2019… saying goodbye to 2018… even though that was yesterday? Are you really making a huge transformation overnight? The answer is no! You’re still you! And that’s worth a lot more than we sometimes give ourselves credit for. Now you get to be the same you, with a lot healthier habits and reaching your goals. You don’t need to wait till the first, not much is changing!
3. We only have the present moment!
After all, the future and the past are not tangible like the present moment is. This moment right now, you have the power to make any changes you want for yourself. Don’t wait, you have no idea what the future could look like. Every decision you make today directly effects your tomorrow. Even if it’s small changes, even if don’t see results immediately, your decisions today will benefit your progress tomorrow. You. Can. Start. Now.
4. Think of all the progress you could make before then.
If you were to start today, this week, imagine all of the progress you could make before January 1st. By the time the first rolls around, you will already have developed so many healthy habits! It will be so much easier to keep up the great things you’re already doing. You can actually start the year feeling like a new you, a healthier you, a you that is ready to take on the amazing year that lays ahead!
5. Let’s be honest, you’re really just procrastinating.
Why are you waiting, anyways? Think about that for a second. Why is it that you’re waiting a couple weeks to start doing and making the changes you need to reach your goals? What is truly holding you back from starting?…. other than yourself? You CAN do this. Stop putting it off, not much will change in a couple weeks.
6. You can do it, and you can do it anytime.
A date won’t change your will power. You can start today. You can start tomorrow. You can start in a couple weeks. You can start next year, or 4 years from now. You can do it, and you can do it whenever YOU want to. Whether you actually see the results and accomplish the goals you want to achieve is up to you, actually starting.
