Post Birth Control Journey: The Spark Notes
Post Birth Control Personal Updates – 5 weeks out!
- I got a period! Whew, it was NO FUN. But I can’t complain, I’m glad it came back already in month one!! I feel like what I did to prepare coming off and did in the first month, probably helped a lot!
Biggest Changes So Far:
-
- Biggest thing that came back quickly — passion, joy and motivation for life!! I’ve always been driven, type-A, motivated, but it all went away. I lost joy, the mental edge in my work, and my entire mood shifted when getting on the birth control pill. It was honestly almost like a depressive state for awhile if I’m being honest.
- Here’s the crazy thing I’ve learned though: Hormonal birth control has been associated with:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Mood Swings
- Crying easily
- Irritability
- Being prescribed anti-depressants
- Increased risk of suicide
- AND… In the largest epidemiological study to date, researchers followed over one million women ages 15-34 for 13 years and found that women were more likely to be diagnosed with depression after being given the pill. In fact, women prescribed combination pills were 23% more likely to be prescribed anti-depressants.
- What’s worse? Teens were 80% more likely to develop depression when prescribed the combined pill. The progestin-only pill wasn’t much better, increasing teens risk 2 fold.
- If you’re experiencing these issues and want change — talk to your doctor, and think about coming of the pill <3
Now on to my other updates…
-
-
- Skin: the same! I’ve never had perfect skin, but it hasn’t gotten any worse thank goodness!
- Weight: pretty much the same, but appetite has been very weird. I honestly haven’t felt hungry much at all. Somewhat bloated a lot. And really just wanting snack foods. I’ve had to make myself start to eat before feeling hungry a lot, and make myself have real meals. Why “listening to your body” isn’t always a good thing — when medical issues/imbalances are going on!
- Exercise: craving nothing intense right now – my body has been just wanting long walks or walk/runs 🙂
- Sleeping: my body has been needing so much more of it! I sued to go off of 6-7 hours, but now, I’ve been needing a FULL EIGHT, and sometimes more. I’ve been trying to give it that in order to help support it!
- Supplements/DUTCH:
- Supplements i’ve been GREAT at taking consistently: Super B, probiotic ++ ningxia juice
- When I have my green smoothie, I also consistently use: maca powder, omegas, flaxseed, and mineralessence (minerals like magnesium)
- I’m waiting for results from my DUTCH test, to supplement specific hormone needs like estrogen dominance or such. You don’t want to blindly take supplements for those, but can take the above vitamins and minerals. When it comes to things like DIM, etc… Test, don’t guess 🙂
- One reminder: LISTEN to your gut – not to the voices saying BC is your only option, or it’s all in your head, or that it’s just about trial and error!
