Becoming Ingredient Aware
As I always preach living a healthy lifestyle is a marathon not a sprint. Diving in headfirst can be really overwhelming, and cause you to quit in the long run. The key to a sustainable lifestyle change is focusing on one thing you can incorporate everyday or even week to get you closer to your goal. Karalynne shares 3 steps to getting started which I’m going to share with you!! No matter how small the change is, it’s all about finding what works best for you in order to work towards creating a lifelong habit.
Here are 3 easy ways to get started transitioning to healthier food options and becoming more ingredient aware.
1. Choose One Ingredient To Focus On At A Time
Once you become aware of all the toxic ingredients in our foods and products it can become overwhelming trying to avoid them all. No-one wants to spend hours at the grocery store reading hundreds of food labels. Instead choose one ingredient to eliminate at a time and focus on it. I’ll be going over how to find the right ingredients to focus on later on.
2. Every Time You Go To The Grocery Store Buy A Better Product Of Something
This step is super easy to incorporate into your weekly grocery routine. Challenge yourself to take an extra couple minutes and read the food labels of an item you normally pick up. Swap out your normal item for a healthier choice.
Easy Food Label Tip: An easy way to tell if a food item is healthy is to read the food label. When reading the food label look for food items you recognize and know such as sugar, cinnamon, flour. If the list is full of names you recognize you should be good!
3. When You Use A Product Up – Buy A Better Choice
This is a super easy way to slowly switch your food and other products out for non-toxic ones. Transitioning to a healthier, more ingredient aware lifestyle can be stressful and expensive but it doesn’t have to be. By only waiting until the product is finished to swap them out you won’t be spending any more money than you would normally and you’ll slowly be working towards a healthier, non-toxic lifestyle.
Let’s Talk Ingredients
Alright so we have some steps to get started and we know what to look for in a food label. But what are the most important ingredients should you eliminate/ focus on? When deciding which ingredients to first focus on, take a look at what is used most in your home or what health struggles are going on in our home. For example, if someone in your home struggles with ADHD prioritize cutting out artificial dyes. Or is a family health struggle is hormone imbalance focus on cutting out parabens from your beauty products. The ingredients you focus on eliminating should differ based on whatever works best for your unique situation.
Some easy common ingredients to eliminate are high fructose corn syrup, artificial dyes, and hydrogenated oils. Once you become familiar with healthier food alternative slowly move to other products in your home such as beauty or cleaning products. A really great resource for checking to see if your products are non-toxic is ewg.org or ThinkDirty! They’re super easy to use as you can download the app and scan products as you shop! Some common toxic ingredients to avoid in beauty products are parabens, artificial dyes, and fragrances.
Balance > Extremes
I’m all about empowering women to live a healthy lifestyle to honor their bodies, but to never let that BECOME their life. So how does one avoid the extremes of getting TOO caught up in “toxic free living” or “healthy eating”, where it becomes mentally unhealthy? It’s important to remember that our bodies are equipped with great detox systems such as the liver or kidney. These organs are amazing at detoxing our bodies!! Becoming ingredient aware shouldnt rule your life and stop you from treating yourself occasionally! Your body was built with a system prepared to handle it. The problem is when our detox pathways become overburdened or clogged. So what can you do to daily to help your body’s detox pathways run effectively? Eat healthy, exercise, and drink water! Don’t get caught up in the extremes and live your life restricting.
